The normalization of Hematocrit in a Patient on Long-term Hemodialysis

Erythrocytosis was seen in one man during maintenance hemodialysis therapy for end-stage renal disease. Nonrenal causes of erythrocytosis were excluded by appropriate clinical studies. A computed tomographic scan of the abdomen showed numerous
renal
cysts in a patient consistent acquired cystic disease of end-stage kidney. Peripheral serum erythropoietin level was normal range as measured by sensitive radioimmunoassay and parathyroid level was slightly elevated. These findings suggest that
acquired
renal cyst and mild elevation of parathyroid hormone were associated with eryth rocytosis in our case.
